How about joining a club, connected with one of your interests or hobbies?
There are so many places to meet people apart from the local bar, which may not provide the best company.
Do you play a sport, a musical instrument, or surf the net?
All of these provide oppotunities to meet people, and you could link to sites that have forums, or register at yahoos dating sites.
You can meet people anywhere, if you are open to it, and go up and introduce yourself, they usually respond warmly, so don't be timid.
How about looking up schoolmates, that you know already and have lost touch with.
You could volanteer at an animal shelter for a day each week, you'll meet people there, a hospital visitation programme,or a recycling environmental programme.
You can do a night course in just about anything, photography, computers, music, cooking, pottery.
Just get out there and smile!

Hi. I understand that you are lonely, but the situation is reversible.
Firstly, there are always people around you, they are sometimes difficult to see that's all! Maybe there are some people at work or at home that you could hang out with. Certainly asking people of the same gender out for a fun time makes it easier because it doesn't come with gender relations confusion. Is there a friend at work you could simply ask to go to the movies with?

Think about joining a club or society, maybe even something you didn't know. I made one of my best friends at a weekly group for amateur writers. The possibilities are endless, you just have to be brave!

Try an adult education class or group, learn a language, learn accounting, joining a dance class could be fun, or maybe kendo or something crazy. If you get really bored, try www.faceparty.com, it's always good for chat.
