Should A Member Of A Church Choir Sit Down From Services, If The Choir Director Knows That They Smoke Cigarettes?

A friend of mine confided to their Minister of Music that they had a smoking issue that was difficult to control. The director was very understanding, and prayed for him. However, at later date, the director told them that if they had a choice between keeping an excellent singer who may have hidden issues, opposed to a ok singer, they might have to use the person not plagued with a cigarette smoking issue.

I don't see how a person smoking in their own time outside the church could be a problem. Its a filthy and very addictive habit. I know ,for i smoked for about 30 years of my life. But unless they are doing it in front of the choir i don't see the difficulty. If its on the grounds of Christian ethics, ie the body is a temple for the soul, then not just smokers should be targeted. As we are all sinners there may not be anyone left to sing in the choir. Take the log from your own eye before you take the splinter from your brothers. :)
