    Costa Rica covers an area of 51,100 km²  or 19,725 square miles. Only 0.7 per cent of its surface area is covered in water. Its size makes Costa Rica the 129th largest country in the world.

    Costa Rica has a population of 4,327,000 according to the last estimate carried out in 2005. This places the country at 119th in terms of population size. With regards to population density, Costa Rica has 85 people per square kilometre, which is 220 people per square mile. This makes Costa Rica the 107th most densely populated country.

    By contrast, the largest country in the world, Russia, covers an area of 17,075,400 square kilometres, almost a thousand times larger. The most densely populated country in the world is the Principality of Monaco which shoehorns its population at the the rate of 23,660 per square kilometre, leaving Costa Rica with 85 trailing in its wake.
