Where Can The Rosebud Indian Reservation Be Found?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Rosebud Indian Reservation is in South Dakota in the US just north of Nebraska on the Great Plains. Parts of the reservation are heavily forested with Ponderosa Pine. It is home to both members of Lakota Sioux tribe and, in particular the sub-tribes of the Brule and Rosebud people. Another name for the Brule is Sicangu Oyate which means 'burnt thighs'. The Brule term is French in origin (linked to the word 'Burn') and is rejected by some Lakota people as being imposed from outside. The reservation reputedly takes its name from a creek which feeds the nearby Little White River. Others say the name, which relates also to the Rosebud tribe resulted from an abundance of wild roses in the area. The Oyate capital is now a town called Rosebud. The reservation was established in 1889 and is now home to an estimated 25,000 people. As in many other reservations a key source of income is gambling. The Rosebud Casino attracts tourists which are another vital source of income to this relatively small community.
