All roofs do tend to gather moisture which eventually starts to seep into the house. This happens because everything must follow the law of gravity however this may not be by following the shortest route. As your house has a flat asphalt roof the problem of leakage is bound to occur sooner or later. Builders have known about this problem for some time now and it maybe because of the material used or the way that the roof was laid that the problem of leakage occurs.
These roofs tend to leak more where there are joints of vents, pipes or chimneys. The best advice would be to get some of the new plastic or rubber roof covering that is now available and lay it over the roof. This new material works like a 'shrink-wrap' and will seal the roof and you won't have to worry about relaying the roof.
Most of these roof coverings have an advertised lifetime of 20 years which is more then the 5 years life of an asphalt roof. It is advisable to first get a builder to repair the current roof and then cover it with the new roofing membrane. Of course another solution would be to build a frame and put a tin roof on it.
