Can It Really Rain Cats And Dogs?

Answer Question

The phrase, it's raining cats and dogs, is a term we tend to use when the rain is pouring down on us, but it doesn't actually mean that it's really raining cats and dogs! The origin of the phrase is unknown and there are many explanations. The most popular is that in olden days people used to have thatched roofs on their houses. Domestic animals such as cats and dogs would often hide in the thatched roof. Whenever it rained heavily the animals would jump from the roof to look for cover, so it looked as though it was raining cats and dogs.

Another suggestion is that the words sound very similar to the Greek saying for, 'an unusual occurrence'. It has also been suggested that at one time the towns of Britain were so badly constructed that many cats and dogs would drown in the town floods. Because the corpses would sail down the streets, people thought that it they had come down from the sky in the last rain fall.
