What Is The Biological Basis Of Consciousness?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The biological basis of consciousness is an area of study that continues to confound scientists. The brain, assisted by the heart, is traditionally thought to be the biological source of consciousness.

However, there are many cases of people who have 'died' on operating tables and have been resuscitated. They may be able to recount memories and impressions that occurred during the time they were considered clinically 'dead'. They may even recall seeing themselves on the operating table. The large number of people who can recall such experiences has warranted a great deal of scientific, as well as spiritual, inquiry.

The issue also raises questions about life after death. The images and sensations that people have claimed to experience during periods of altered or stopped brain activity have been interpreted in different ways. Some people think that the images are a result of the brain 'winding down'; others feel that they are evidence of life after death.
