We have a hummingbird feeder but the birds do not seem to go to it. They go to the bird bath or waterfall. Are we putting it in the wrong place?

There are a number of imaginatively-styled hummingbird feeders available today. The feeders are sold in stores ranging from dedicated bird shops and garden centres to the various discount marts. The feeders can also be availed of by mail order. Most feeders are made of plastic, glass, or ceramic. The feeders are much too recent and a sudden development for hummingbirds to recognize instinctively, leave alone identify them as food sources. The birds need to be lured and have to learn how to use them. This they do very well by watching other hummers and through their own natural and inherent inquisitiveness.
If you find that the birds seem to prefer one style of feeder over another, it is probably only because they identify with it strongly. In case the feeder is changed, they may not feed right away, but in good time they will adapt. A new feeder may be discovered sooner if it is kept over or near a garden of hummingbird plants. You could also place the feeder near a window from where you can watch the birds and enjoy the sight. The hummingbird feeder should ideally be placed where you have watched the birds frequent and away from anything that poses hazardous to the birds, like a clear glass window.
