Vikings were thought to be settled in Hasting during the Bronze Age. The Viking Age is said to have ended after the battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066.

The Word Viking was added to the English language with romantic subtext in the 18th century. Etymologist had assigned the earliest use of this word to Anglo-Frankish writers. Who associated the word "Viking" to the one who raids places.

According to the current Scandinavian languages the word Viking is given to people who go on Viking expeditions either to raid or trade. The North Germanic expansion period starting in 790s and coming to an end during the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, is regarded as the Viking age.
