What Kind Of Snake Is Burgandy And Black?

I live in Inwood, West Virginia and happened to see a baby snake while walking out with my 3 young children today. It was near an area that they enjoy playing at. I knew if there was a baby then somewhere there was a mom. This snake was burgandy and black. I have never seen one those colors. I want to know what kind of snake it was and should I be concerned.

I hope you didn't try to touch it, in the research I did, and having a hick for a husband, I came up with the copperhead as the closest to the description that you gave. This is a venomous snake. Even if it was a garter snake you still didn't want to touch it.
For future reference, you might want to find out what kinds of snakes are there in W. Va. and your neighbouring states just to make sure that if you come across them in the future, you don't get bitten by something venomous. Good luck.

The colouration and patterns are the most distinguishing characteristics that help to identify a species, especially snakes. However, the colouration and patterns can also be the most difficult characteristics to describe. In addition to the dilemma, nearly all snakes have different colours and patterns on their backs and undersides or bellies. Colour is frequently the most specific descriptor in the case of snakes. The vibrancy and combinations speak much about how venomous the snake is and the genus. The colour of the snake is observed for research and study and the dominant colours are studied in comparison to the pale hues.

The burgundy and black combination, with the natural gloss their skin has, is a deadly one. The coral snake is a very venomous and dangerous snake that is common in many areas, but with secret habitat. This species is very secretive in nature and are usually encountered in early morning and late evening hours. The burgundy and black coral snakes can be found in any environment. The average length of a coral snake is 24 inches, while the maximum measured length recorded is 47½ inches! With all its venom, the coral snake is a beautiful sight with the glistening black and burgundy.
