P.O.D is short for the term Print on Demand. It is the ordinarily used term to denote the digital printing technology that can print an entire book and bind it in a very short time frame, that is, in a matter of minutes. This makes it simple, trouble-free and cost-effective to manufacture books one or even two at a time or in small lots, instead of in bigger print runs of hundreds or several thousands.

POD has a variety of different applications. Business and educational publishers make use of it to print advance copies, or when they cannot rationalize the expenditure of generating and warehousing a considerably sizeable print run. For example, to render backlist books accessible. A few self-sufficient publishers make use of it as an additional economical fulfillment method.
