Who Was Bobby Sands?

    Roibeard Gearóid Ó Seachnasaigh or  Robert Gerard Sands was born in 1954 in Rathcoole, a predominantly loyalist district of north Belfast.
    His paternal grandfather was a protestant.
    1st March 1981

    He was imprisoned for his political beliefs and activities including membership of the IRA.

    Bobby Sands was one of the Hunger Strikers who campaigned for bettr treatment of political prisoners and a relaxation of prison rules. They demanded on Five Demands:
    1The right not to wear a prison uniform;
    2.The right not to do prison work
    3.The right of free association with other prisoners;
    4.The right to organise their own educational and recreational facilities;
    5.The right to one visit, one letter and one parcel per week.

    Sands went on hunger strike for 66 days before he died of starvation in Long Kesh goal in 1981. He was elected MP for Fermanagh and south Tyrone but never took up his place in parliament
