Ken Follett in the 90s strayed from his traditional format and tried to write books in the style of Michael Crichton. However books that he wrote in this style did not do well in terms of sales and resulted ultimately in Ken Follett returning to the style of writing he was best known for. His book Jackdaw was released in the year 2001.
Jackdaw was set during the time of World War 2. Where the resistance in France led by Felicity Clairet, attack a German communication post but fail miserably and are repulsed by the defending Germans. Most of her crew are either killed or taken prisoner. Her next attempt takes place after she returns from England and this time involves an assault crew that is entirely comprised of women. The team comprises of an explosive expert, a markswoman, a telephone operator, and the works.
