Laredo, on the edge of Texas, is an ancient colonial type city, formerly of Mexican ownership which offers a cosmopolitan break for everyone, with lots of excitingly different attractions.  Here are 5 things you must to do:

    1. Take a trip across the Rio Grande.  The history of this town is intertwined with a bridge over the Rio Grande and its unbelievable scenery.  Don't miss it.
    2. Even if you aren't wild about birds, you can't visit Laredo and not do some bird-watching at the Campus of the Laredo Community College and the St Peter's Neighbourhood Historical District, or watch nesting birds at Zacate Creek.  There are thousands to be seen.
    3. Eat authentic Mexican and Spanish at one of the hundreds of excellent restaurants which offer delicious food at extremely competitive prices (and the beer is good too!).  Just be sure to check out the chilli !
    4. Take some time out for retail therapy with a trip to the shops.  The cultural mix of Mexican, Spanish and American influences offer a veritable treat for shoppers.  Authentic crafts and curious knick knacks at very good prices will leave you spoilt for choice.
    5. Why not immerse yourself in history by taking in the Republic of the Rio Grande Museum?  A small and charming museum, with a range of interesting exhibits, you'll soon find yourself transfixed by the intriguing history of Laredo and its tale of Mexican and American control and how that has shaped it into the town of today.
