If you are a university student looking to rent an apartment in Ottawa, Canada's national capital, finding a decent location relatively close to your school, and at a reasonable price, are probably two key factors to consider.
For students attending the University of Ottawa, there are two ideal neighbourhoods to consider when looking for an apartment to rent. The Sandy Hill area, located directly east of the University's downtown campus, is an excellent option and very popular among undergraduate students. You will be within a short walking distance of the campus (usually no more than 5 to 10 minutes) and you can often find apartments at reasonable prices. You should expect to pay about $600 to $650 for a one room, studio apartment and most of these flats are located in older, two to three storey buildings. There are also larger apartment for rent in duplexes or town-houses.
The other neighbourhood to consider is Centretown, which is essentially downtown Ottawa. In 2006, the City of Ottawa completed the construction of the footbridge which connects this area of the city to the Ottawa U. campus. You should be able to find one-bedroom apartments in either highrise or low-rise buildings for between $700 and $750. Studio apartments are often available for about $650.
If you are attending Carleton University, located south of downtown Ottawa, the Glebe is a good place to look for an apartment. Many of the flats are in duplexes or triplexes and most of them are older houses, built over 50 years ago. You should be able to find a nice, two bedroom flat, with a living room and dining area for under $1200. This size is ideal if you wish to split the costs with a flatmate.
