Beibei the fish, Jingjing the Panda, Huanhuan the Olympic flame, Yingying the Tibetian antelope and Nini the swallow are all the official mascots of the summer Olympic games to be held in Beijing in 2008. The tradition can be traced back to Grenoble, France, where mascots were first used during the winter Olympics.
Mascots are generally animals or people or even mythological beings created to represent the culture of the country hosting the games. More and more it has come to mean something commercial and as a way of marketing the event and related products. These new mascots are also referred to as the 'friendlies'. They are painted the colours of the Olympic rings, and when their names are placed in conjunction, they go to mean "Beijing Welcomes You".
