My moms like that, worrying, they likely would have no signal to help also.

Uummm...are you kidding me? There is no way I would allow my 5th grader to go anywhere if they weren'y allowed to call me or me call them. Especially for an entire week. That is just absurd. I think all of the parents should not let their children go and explain to the school why no one is going on this trip. Then the school will see how ridiculous and irresponsible they are being.

Shame on that school.....and the parents who would allow that. Too much going on in the world today to force a parent not to be able to contact their child!

Yes, very rare. But rare still imply's a chance. And a chance is something that I personally would never take when it comes to my children. And no, I'm not one of those over protective people. I allowed my kids to run around and play when they were small, climb trees, go on trips, sleep overs, etc., but when they are out of my care... I will never take a chance.

Yes but also the chance is practically 00001% out of 100 that something bad would happen, as well, keep in mind not enough freedom causes lack of independence feeling, and that can lead to some depression.. I know that from experience

You're probably right...PROBABLY, nothing will happen to the child. But my kids had/have plenty of freedom. As I've stated in many of my comments and answers, they are very happy children and very respectful of me. But I still would never let them go away for a week without contact at that age. Probably, no one will steal my baby out of my car if I just run into the store for a gallon of milk either....but again, not a chance I would be willing to take. Just my opinion~
