I have housetrained many dogs. Puppies need to be kept in a box, just big enough for dog to turn around in w.out extra room. Keep puppy in box until you are ready to watch actively. Do not let dog out of sight. When removing from box, take directly outside to the spot you will be using. Place any feces on that area. Stay out till puppy goes in' his area'. Then bring him in and reward him, let him play out of the box only when you can, watch him closely. The rest of the time dog should be in box. After feeding, take to outside spot first and everytime. Do not give puppy a chance to mess on floor. Best to catch in the act of squatting, and run dog out to spot. Should take no more than 2 0r 3 weeks to train. All feces should be put in the 'going area'. This stimulates dog's need to go, and go there. Dachshunds are smart dogs. Just enough room to turn around in!

It would help if you gave more details. Is it fouling the crate or just outside?
A 2 year old dog is going to be tough. One of the things is that it is longer from eating, drinking, etc. Until they are ready to go. Watch him carefully and learn to recognize when he needs to go. Then take him out. Exercise stimulates elimination. Take him out and walk, walk, walk. They can only walk and hold it so long. When nature finally has its way, lavish praise on him. I frequently use that technique before taking a puppy in a public place.
