A cold blooded animal, also described as an 'ectotherm' is a creature that lacks the internal temperature regulating mechanism that a warm blooded animal has. What this means is that this creature has to depend on solar energy for the important process of the regulation of body temperature, and the solar energy is captured when the creature ventures out into the open to sun itself. The heat that they absorb is then converted to energy, which is then used to process its various internal processes, and the metabolism of the creature is activated to a high level.
This is what makes a cold blooded animal what it is, and often, when the temperature is too warm, this creature will burrow into the sand, the reason being that of regulating internal body temperatures.
A frog regulates its body temperature by either burying itself in the soft earth, or finding a cool spot in the water, and a fish has been known to change its depth when it needs to get warmer or cooler.
