Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the name of a species of Gram-negative bacteria. These bacteria cause the disease named gonorrhoea. These bacteria need special type of nutrients for their survival. They are highly fastidious cocci which appear in pairs. They cause a sexually transmitted disease named gonorrhoea. It is characterised by symptoms like pus-like discharge from the genitals with a foul odour. It also causes inflammation during urination and conjunctivitis.

Thus this bacterium is found in the uterus and the fallopian tube in women. It can also infect the genital tract, mouth and rectum of both men and women. The cervix is the first place that it infects in women. It is a curable disease but if neglected may cause complications. This bacteria is also cultivated in labs for scientific experiments and study.
