What Exactly Does Female Sterilisation Involve?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Many women who do not want any children decide to get sterilised. Basically a sterilisation involves either blocking the fallopian tubes or cutting them in order to prevent pregnancy. The fallopian tubes are used to carry the eggs and if they are blocked no eggs can be fertilised by a man's sperm.
Usually the procedure does not take long and it is also usually only done under a local aesthetic. It is over ninety-nine percent effective and many women choose to undergo the operation each year. There is the rare chance after the operation that the tubes will join together but it is a very slim chance.

Overall sterilisation is a permanent way of stopping any future pregnancies and it is know as 'tubal occlusion' in women and as a 'vasectomy' in men. There are times when the procedure may not work but usually it is extremely effective. If you have only just had the procedure it is important to still use contraception for a short while afterwards just to be sure.
