Alfred Neobard Palmer was born on 10th July 1847 in Thetford, East Anglia .
Trained as a chemist , working in East Anglia, Manchester and later Wrexham. He moved to Wales with his Welsh wife
Esther (Ettie) Francis in 1880. He was the chief chemist at Brymbo Steelworks,. He had always had an interest in local history.
Soon after moving to Wrexham he wrote 'The Town, Fields and Folk of Wrexham in the Time of James the First' (1883), based on a survey of Bromfield and Yale by John Norden, 1620. He wrote 11 books and many articles on local history and archaeology. He published many articles himself.
His book History of the town of Wrexham is full of details on the economic and social life of that town.
Palmer's life and work is recorded in two articles in the Denbighshire Historical Society Transactions, by A. H. Dodd. Vol 15 (1966), C. J. Williams Vol 46 (1997). , and also by A. H. Dodd in the 'Dictionary of Welsh Biography'.
The A. N. Palmer Centre for Local Studies and Archives in Wrexham Museum in Regent Street, holds many of his books and manuscripts.
