The Song Dynasty in China (960-1279) actually succeeded the T'ang dynasty. It was an amazing period of both urbanisation and cultural resurgence. Ceramics became very sophisticated during this time and were made using glazing techniques which would form the basis for modern 'china' (as in porcelain products) as we recognise them today in the sense of being glazed and decorative, as well as aesthetically pleasing.
The Song empire was much smaller than the T'ang empire, due to various conquests which were taken along its northern borders.
Despite this however, it saw the use of the abacus being standardised as well as gunpowder being used in guns.
On the cultural side there were significant improvements in architecture. Printing became quite widespread during this period. Poetry and lanscape painting also flourished during this period and generally it is recognised as a hugely significant era for both China and the world !
