I'm doing some homework. I need to find out what burning fossil fuels release a lot of.

    In addition to methane a quick simple answer is Carbon Dioxide or CO2.

      No, burning is oxidation--adding oxygen to the source material. If you burn a long-chain carbon (which most fossil fuels are), you'll produce CO2 (Carbon dioxide). Methane (CH4) would tend to burn, even if it was temporarily produced. The major source of methane is not burning fossil fuels, it is digestion and/or rotting. Anaerobic bacteria (those that live in the absence of oxygen) produce methane when they break down long carbon chains.
