How Do You Fix A Thermostat On A Car?

Answer Question

If there is a small problem with your thermostat then it's best that you try and fix it yourself. However a thermostat that is seriously spoiled will be hard to fix and in those circumstances the best course of action would be to throw it away- and get a new one.

Firstly you will need to remove the cover of the thermostat. If your thermostat is mechanical then you must ensure that the mercury switches (that is the little vial that is full of a silvery liquid or mercury) are level. You will now need to find what is known as a heat anticipator. It is usually a smallish lever on a calibrated scale.

Next you will need to adjust the heat anticipator a mark closer to the 'longer' setting especially if the air conditioning or the furnace goes on or off too frequently. Carefully move the lever away from the 'longer' setting particularly if you want the air conditioner or furnace to start up more. Now wait until the thermostat stabilizes with the new setting. Repeat the process if required.

Thermostats basically measure your car's ambient temperature and then use that data to activate your air conditioner depending upon the settings of that particular thermostat.
