What Is Unusual About Cats From The Isle Of Man?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Irish Sea island of Man is the origin of cats without tails, now known as "Manx" cats.
The genetic mutation actually produces three tail lengths recognized by cat breeders: "rumpy," a complete absence of a tail; "stumpy," a stump with one or more vertebrae, 1-5 inches long; and "full-tail, or longie," a full tail but other characteristics of the breed.
Various myths attempt to explain the origin of the tail-less Manx cats, or link it to the short- or bob-tailed breeds of Asia. But research has shown that Manx cats bear a different phenotype.
With its missing or stubby tail and longer back legs than its front legs, the Manx cat is nicknamed the "cabbit."
