A White Christmas is the name of an event where snow is on the ground on the Christmas Day. In May 1940, lyric writer and composer Irving Berlin signed an exclusive contract for Paramount Pictures to pen songs for a film musical based on the premise of an inn that opened only on public holidays. The song "White Christmas" which became quite a rage was hummed by Berlin for the first time to Fred Astaire, while working with him on the sets of the film Top Hat in 1935. The song was reserved initially for a future Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers movie project. However the director Mark Sandrich did not quite approve of the song for the proposed film. Irving Berlin's contract with Paramount required him to write a song for every major holiday of the year. Writing a song about Christmas proved to be extremely challenging to him. When the actor Bing Crosby of Holiday Inn heard the song for the first time, he was jubilant and congratulated Irving Berlin on bringing out a masterpiece.
