Despite being approved by the American and European FDA it is believed that there are number of side effects associated with the use of this substance. Aspartame upon consumption breaks down into its various component chemicals including methanol, aspartic acid, phenylalanine and further subdivisions of formic acid and formaldehyde.

The adverse side effects related to consumption are believed to be blindness, pain in the eyes, bulging eyes, hearing impairment, intolerance to noise, epileptic seizures, tumours, migraines, headaches, memory loss, confusion, insomnia, anxiety, aggression, irritability, shortness of breath, hives, itching, high blood pressure and several others.

In the year 2005 the banning of this substance was even raised in the British parliament. The approval of this drug is also a matter of controversy.

I have recently started consuming products with this ingredient. I am prone to migraines. They have been increasing in the last six months. I drink at least three diet lemonade drinks a day. Thank you for the information. You just helped me modify my medication and re examine my intake of this product.
