Is A 10 Litre Bowl Good Enough For A Goldfish Without A Filter?

Answer Question

Goldfish, they say, need 10 gallons per fish. In my experience, mine did fine in a bowl without filter. I would; however, recommend cleaning it at least every 3 weeks, as goldfish are very dirty. It's also a good idea to keep an ammonia neutralizer handy, (found at Pet smart or Walmart) and also some Stress Coat (also found at any pet store). This helps to maintain the natural slime coat of the fish and aids with stress management when the water is changed or new fish added. Good luck-hope that helps!!

Goldfish do produce much more ammonia compared to other fish species, so a filtered aquarium is always recommended for goldfish, as well as any other fish species. Remember that a fish is living in the same water they go to the bathroom in. You would not want to bath in your toilet so why would your fish? If you choose to keep your fish in a tank with no filter, then I would recommend cleaning the tank twice a week. If you have a filter pump, this adds oxygen to the water as well as filtering out waste, so your fish would certainly be happier and live longer. You would only have to clean the tank about once a month if you had a filter.
