If my "empire" you mean "civilization," they were ultimately destroyed by their encounter with Europeans. The Europeans were 4,500 years or so more advanced in "western civilization" than the Amerindian civilization. Prior to the arrival of the Europeans, some were destroyed by wars with other Amerindians. Some destroyed themselves, e.g. The Maya.
