She would go off to herself and start crying and licking herself.

You will probably have to check with a vet-- have her examined to know when to expect the litter. They will be able to tell you usually about how many pups (heartbeats) and about when to expect them. If you don't take her beforehand, watch for signs of "nesting" behavior. She will instinctively be looking outside or inside for a place to have her pups. She may dig if outside; if she's an inside dog, she'll look for a private, quiet, possibly dark space with some soft towels, blanket (or even dirty laundry!!--so don't leave your best socks on the floor...). Dogs are den animals and will try to recreate a den environment. Good luck
