What Awards Did "The Jewel In The Crown" Win?

Answer Question

This 1985 drama won 5 BAFTAs, including Best Actor for Tim Piggot-Smith. He played Ronald Merrick, a security officer who arrests and brutally interrogates Hari Kumar (Art Malik) a young, public-school educated Indian, on an accusation of rape. The accusation is false (that is, there was a rape, but not by Hari) and the victim, a young English woman called Daphne Manners (Susan Wooldridge) and friend of Hari, insists on his innocence. However, Manners is both envious of Kumar's privileged upbringing and education and resentful that an Indian should have "more than a white man." He is also a repressed homosexual and has strong feelings for Kumar, which easily turn to hate. He hounds Kumar, eventually causing his death. Piggot-Smith's portrayal of this character won great admiration.
Even more memorably, the whole production won the International Emmy for Best Drama in 1984. Ever since, the series has been known as "The Jewel in ITV's Crown."
