This is an answer to which there are a myriad of answers. In reality there is probably little difference. In America some ketchup's may be sold under the name of Catsup. But this is mainly in North East America and most Americans still call ketchup 'ketchup' as opposed to catsup.
They both use the same ingredients, although sometimes catsup may be more spicy than traditional ketchup.
However, you can get various recipes for all types of catsup, from apple to cranberry or even Picante (spicy) Catsup.
Some people assert the only difference is that one is a trade name (catsup) whereas the other isn't. Others state that it catsup actually an Old English term for ketchup. Others argue that it is actually an Anglicisation of the Chinese phrase ke tsiap which effectively means fish brine.
However, the difference is obviously not great and so it probably isn't worth losing any sleep over whether a sauce is catsup or ketchup !
