He is a British human rights activist, most famous world-wide for his attempts to make a citizen's arrest (in both 1999 and 2001) on President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. Tatchell is also famous in Britain for being part of the group OutRage!, which outs homosexuals against their will. Tatchell defends this by saying that he only does it when the people in question say or do negative things towards gays or the gay community.
Tatchell was born in Australia in 1952, to working class parents. His activism started with campaigns to support the rights of indigenous people, before he was out of High School. He also protested against the death penalty and the Vietnam war.
The threat of conscription caused Tatchell to move to London in 1971. He was first a student, later a journalist and a continued gay activist. He has run for election but failed to win public office several times.
Tatchell has never turned away from controversy, and has cultivated as many enemies as he has admirers.
