What Is The Origin Of The Surname Edmonston?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Edmonstons take their name from Edmonstone, this was originally the tun of Eadmund. This was near Edinburgh.
The tun might have originally derived its name from Aedmund filas Forn who was a witness to a charter  by Thor, filus Swani and dated around 1150.
The families of this name also settled around the Berwickshire area and in Lanarkshire on lands to which they gave their name.
A Henry de Edmundistun witnessed a charter around the year 1200 by Henry de Brade. He is probably the first person to have that name on record.
The name was taken to the Shetland Isles around 1560 and a family of that name settled on the island of Unst.
It can also be found in the forms of Edmondstone, Edmonstone, Edmiston and Edmestoune.
