Home learning courses can be just as good as practical courses but they do require a lot of effort and motivation. It all depends on the subject that you wish to do. If you are studying a computer based course such as 'learning Microsoft packages', a home learning course is likely to be just as good as a practical course. However for some subjects such as counselling and beauty, it is usually better to take a course where you actually do the job while you are learning therefore a home learning course would not be ideal for you.
It is always better to go with well known companies such as the Open University or ICS, rather than risking going with an unknown one. This is because unfortunately there are some companies out there that will scam you out of money and exploit your hopes of becoming better educated. So always research the company you are thinking of applying to and ask around to see if other people have heard of them too.

Home learning courses can be a great option for those who want to try a more flexible type of study than that of a traditional university. Many home learning courses allow you to study for your qualification in small segments. That way, you can fit it into your schedule if you work full-time, have kids or other time constraints.
The commitment needed, however, is not to be underestimated! Studying at home presents unique challenges. You may find that when you have a paper or other assignment to complete, suddenly your clothes closet is demanding that you clean it!! Studying at home requires discipline, but also develops discipline. It is very rewarding when your hard work pays off with a good mark or by achieving your qualification.
Research is fundamental in finding the right home learning course for you. Some, like the Open University, are well-recognized in the professional world. Others are not as well-known or may be illegitimate - the last thing you want is to spend time and money on a course that is not going to benefit you. Some home study courses have student loans and scholarships. When searching for a home study course, always remember that you are the paying customer. The quality and service that you would demand with any other product also applies to home study.
