Hence on reacting with metals, oxygen tends to form bivalent negative ion, however, with non metals it normally forms two covalent bonds by sharing two electrons separately.

Rockets carry liquid oxygen as a fuel in space. A mixture of oxygen and acetylene burns with the very hot flame and the temperature reaches upon three thousand °C. This flame is used for welding purposes.
