Can Aromatherapy Oils Be Used During Pregnancy?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

As a general rule it is not advisable to use aromatherapy oils when pregnant.  Some of the oils can assist menstruation i.e stimulate the body to menstruate.  This could bring on contractions and so is not advisable.
Some oils, such as lavender and frankinsence are reputedly useful during labour, but these are linked to menstruation and contractions, so may not be suitable for women in the earlier stages of pregnancy.
Many doctors are now beginning to think that there is a physiological response to aromatherapy oils and given that the actual scientific 'proof' of these oils is still quite sketchy, it is best to avoid using any aromatherapy oils during pregnancy.
If however, you feel that you could benefit from using a particular type of oil, it would be beneficial to talk to a qualified aromatherapist prior to use.  This would allow the aromatherapist to gain an insight into any other conditions you have and make recommendations about a particular oils' suitability.
