    Jimmy Carter was born and raised in southwest Georgia in the hamlet of Plains near the large town of Americus. He was the first ever President of the United States to be born in a hospital. His family had been living in the state of Georgia since several years previously. He attended Plains High School and was considered a star of football and basketball.

    Jimmy Carters family had been residing in the state of Georgia for generations. Jimmy Carter's great grandfather had seen action at the Battle of Gettysburg while serving in the Confederate States Army. His parents were Lillian Gordy Carter and James Earl. He was their eldest child. In his early years Carter was very fond of reading and was very fond of Christianity. His family had a peanut farming business in the Plains to which he would some day return.
