Can One Drown In The Dead Sea?

Answer Question

7 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Dead Sea is a land locked water body situated between the borders of Israel and Jordan; it is 1371 ft below sea level. It is one of the lowest elevated places and the most saline water body on Earth. It is more than eight times saline as compared to ocean water. The Jordan River is the only tributary of the Dead Sea while there is no outlet for the water of the Dead Sea.

The sea is about 1000 ft deep however on account of its high salt content one can easily float on the surface of the water. The density of salt water is more as compared to fresh water and the water of the Dead Sea is 35% saline which results in a greater upward thrust on any object immersed in it and the body if its average density is less like for example the human body, floats on the surface based on the law of buoyancy which states that the buoyant force is equal to the weight of the displaced fluid.

It really depends on what you mean by "drown."  It is virtually impossible to sink in the Dead Sea, because of it's name. The reason it is called the Dead Sea is that it's so salty that nothing can live in it. More salt makes it more buoyant. Swimming in the Dead Sea is like swimming with 10 or 20 water wings and an inflatable snow tube.

You can drown, though, if you swallow so much water and it fills up your lungs. If that's your definition of drown, then yes, you can definitely drown in the Dead Sea.

No, because dead sea has a high level of salinity(salt), that's why we are going to float. About your question, may be?, unless you absorbed plenty of water from dead sea.

If you get the tiniest drop of water in your eye it hurts like hell. Trust me.
You might go permanently blind, but unless you ingest (drink or breathe) water you won't die. I heard about a third of a cup will kill you.
It's a very unique experience though, and really fun.
When you lie on your back, your ears go underwater, but no further.

It depends on what you mean by drown... If you passed out and were laying face down in the water then yes you could but sink and drown probably not.

          Hope this helps
