Many people get confused about Africa. So many people refer to it as a country, when in fact, it’s a whole continent. Within Africa, there are 54 countries including south Sudan at this time, ranging from Algeria to Nigeria. The amount of countries found in Africa has increased, decreased and generally changed throughout history as most of the territorial divisions within Africa were made by the colonial powers.

One of the new countries found in Africa is Eritrea. Countries will appear and disappear over time as there are a number of conflicting ideologies and governments located in Africa. Despite being one of the biggest continents, too, Africa is actually the poorest. Despite the huge natural wealth, too, the continent has remained poor because of its colonial past.

Africa is the second-largest continent, and the second most populous continent, after Russia and Asia. There is about 30.2 million sq km within the continent, including the adjacent islands. The continent covers six per cent of the whole of the earth’s surface, and around a fifth of the total land area. Even more impressively, the continent has around one billion people taking up the land.

Indeed, that’d be rather impressive for a single country, but all of these statistics are shared between 54 independent countries. The huge continent makes up for over 14 per cent of the world’s human population, and today is often a recipient of charity from all over the world. Whilst not the whole of Africa is living in poverty, a large proportion of Northern Africa lives in dire poverty.

There are fifty four countries currently in the continent of Africa. The list of countries includes Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of the Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Western Sahara, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The number of countries has often increased and altered as most of the territorial divisions in Africa were made by the colonial powers. Eritrea for example is a relatively new country. Africa is the poorest continent despite its abundant natural wealth and a major reason for this has been its colonial past.

Africans may be poor, but Africa is most definitely NOT POOR. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out why. Poor governance and strive for power, have led to africans not being able to enjoy the peace required to sustainably harness the available resources to solve or meet their needs.

The African continent is vast in area and diversity. There are forty seven countries on the African continent. This includes the vast expanse of the disputed territory of Western Sahara. Many a times, the official listings also include the islands off the coast and this brings the number to a total of fifty three. The island nations recognized as part of the African continent include:
- Cape Verde.
- São Tomé and Príncipe.
- Madagascar.
- Comoros.
- Seychelles.
- Mauritius.

Each of the island nations off the coast are independent nations. There are some sources that do not consider all of the island countries off the coast of Africa as African and so, the total number fluctuates. The observation is that although each of these island nations may have diverse populations and cultural traditions, all of them have substantial African population and very strong historical connections to the continent of Africa. Hence, they are usually considered African.

The continent of Africa is as unique as its people and cultures that inhabit the land. The distinctly different flora and fauna and the rich wild life have made the mainland and the island nations off the coast of Africa popular tourist and business destinations.

There has recently been a debate on the number of countries in Africa.

The reason for this debate is that while some countries are recognized
by the United Nations (UN), some others are not recognized as members of
the African Union.

Officially, 53 countries belong to the African Union
(AU) and United Nations. Morocco is not recognized by the AU but is
accepted by the UN.

There are 47 continental countries. The island countries are Cape Verde, Sao Tome and Princepe, Comoros, Seychelles, and Mauritus. So all together there are 53 countries. There is some dispute over such territories as Saint Helena and Reunion. These are indeed territories of France and not African countries.

I am kinda sick of people arguing like this on the internet - it's sad and pathetic. Insulting someone but saying they are poor is debatable but does not have to be debated on the internet!!! I guess there are 50-60 countries in Africa but there are some still forming due to joint civilisations gaining independence
