Who Founded Levi Jeans?

Answer Question

Levi Strauss was the founder of Levi jeans.  He was born in 1829 in Bavaria and emigrated to the United States at the age of 21.  His original idea was to sell canvas tents and wagon covers to the many gold prospectors who were in America.  However, he realised that there was a demand for hard wearing trousers for the prospectors and so he made very durable, long lasting trousers from canvas.  He only switched to denim after meeting a tailor from Nevada called Jacob Davis.  Davis and Strauss formed a partnership to produce 'strengthened' trousers.  In 1874 they managed to obtain a patent for the finish of their trousers.  This was a method whereby the fastening of the pocket corners was done in such a way that they would not tear (or at least be tear resistant).  Levi died in 1902, but by that stage he was already a millionaire.
