How Many Types Of Microprocessors Are There?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

There are several thousands (if not tens or hundreds of thousands) of different types (part numbers) of microprocessors and/or microcontrollers that have been, or are being, commercially produced. Given the availability of tools today that will realize virtually any digital design, the number is limited only by your imagination, and by your definition of a microprocessor.

The Freescale ad linked on this page goes just to one 8-bit processor line, which currently has 84 products in 16 different families. More are being created, and parts are going obsolete all the time. They also make 16- and 32-bit devices with almost as many products in each of those lines. Many are custom and proprietary, so don't appear in a commercial catalog. If one vendor makes several hundred different part numbers, and there are many more than 10 vendors, you easily get to thousands...

... Of part numbers. Then there are the FPGAs. Now available in thousands to hundreds of thousands of gates, these can implement very sophisticated processors. Simple ones only require a few hundred to a few thousand gates. Anybody with an idea can make a new processor in almost no time. You can also buy processor intellectual property (designs) from companies who specialize in selling them. These are for the purpose of customization, so every one is different. # of customers = # of processors.
