I understand what you are asking, I think. After a cow is slaughtered it produces much more meat than can possibly be used in one hamburger. Both cows and steers are slaughtered for their meat, by the way. Cows are generally not slaughtered when they are young and producing calves, but later on their meat is as good as any.
