Apart from the modern Seven Wonders of the World, there are seven ancient wonders of the world as well. Almost about two thousand years ago, a Greek writer made a list of the greatest and the most outstanding of buildings, monuments and statues in the world. He termed them as the 'Seven Wonders of the World'.
The first wonder were the pyramids of Egypt, which is also part of the modern seven wonders of the world. Next came the Colossus of Rhodes, which was a monumental statue of the Greek god Apollo (the son of Zeus). The third wonder was the Mausoleum, which was a huge tomb built by the wife of a prince in Asia minor, which she built in honour of her husband after he died. Then follows the temple of Ephesus, which the Greeks built in honour of their Goddess of hunting. The fifth wonder of the world were the Hanging Gardens of Babylon built by the great king Nebuchadnezzar. The last two wonders were the Pharos, which were gargantuan marble lighthouse in Egypt and a statue of Zeus, the king of the Greek gods, which was made of marble, gold and ivory.

Three wonders of the ancient world are these:-
1- The Pyramids of Egypt: It is a group of three pyramids, situated about 8 and half miles South West of Cairo (Egypt). The great pyramid of Khufu at Giza is the only one of the original seven wonders that still exists. It was built in 2690 B.C. by Cheops, the second pharaoh of 4th dynasty. The original height of the pyramid was 481 feet, but now it is 450 feet.
2- The Hanging Gardens of Babylon: These were built in Iraq by King Nebuchadnezzar about 600 B.C. in memory of his beloved Queen Amuhia. Originally the gardens were laid in five stories vaulted structure, rising from 75 to 300 feet, with provision for raising water. No traces of the hanging gardens have been left now.
3- Statue of Zeus (Jupiter): The statue of Zeus was craved out about 2,400 years ago; by the Greek sculpture Phidias, near the site of original Olympic Games. It was a 40 feet high statue, covered with the ten sheets of gold and ivory, the eyes were decorated with jewels. It was destroyed by fire in A.D. 476. Now it has no trace, except reproductions on coins.
