The western U.S. state of Nevada contains both of these oddly named stretches of road.
"The Loneliest Road" is U.S. Highway 50, running more than 400 miles west-east from the California border near the state capital, Carson City, to the Utah border. Nevada is mainly public land and vastly underpopulated so it may as much to an hour when anyone will pass you on this stretch of highway.
A national magazine joking called 50 the nation's "loneliest road," and legislators voted to make the designation official. Merchants along the route then decided to capitalize on it. You can have your photo taken in front of one of the many "Loneliest Road in America" signs, or buy a T-shirt proclaiming, "I survived the Loneliest Road in America."
"The Extraterrestrial Highway" is State Highway 375, which skirts Nellis Air Force Base in Southern Nevada. Along the route is the federal government's mysterious "Area 51," which UFO buffs claim contains top-secret military experiments on and research into flying saucers and alien beings. "UFO-logists" on the hills overlooking area 51 regularly scan it with binoculars. The tiny town of Rachel calls itself the "UFO Capital of the World," and you can swap theories and tales of close encounters at the Alie-Inn (get it?) Diner.
Again, the fun-loving Nevada Legislature voted to declare 375 "The Extraterrestrial Highway," and erected designation signs along it that feature flying saucers.
