What Is The Hay Diet?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Hay diet, despite its name has nothing to do with eating either grass or hay!  It was devised by Dr William Howard Hay (1866-1940) who proposed that some foods actually 'fight' within the body and impede digestion, resulting in a sluggish digestive system but also in being overweight.
He sectioned food into Starch (Carbohydrates), Proteins and Neutral.
He thought that starch and neutrals could be mixed and proteins and neutrals, but that starch and proteins should never be mixed.  So you could have salad and steak for lunch, but not steak and potato, since potato is starch and steak is protein.
He advised leaving a gap between eating proteins and starches, so that the digestive system could fully deal with one set, before having to deal with another.
The system allows people to eat as much as they like and is often described as a way of eating as opposed to a diet.  It still has many followers worlwide, although some people find it too significant a change in eating patterns, others find it very beneficial.
