Mikhail Nikolaevitch Baryshnikov was born on the 28th of January in the year 1948 in Riga in Latvia. He is of Russian descent and is one of the most famous Russian dancers, performers, choreographers and an actor. He claims o have had a happy childhood although his mother died when he was just 13 years old. He was said to have been very active in sports and showed keen interest in the piano and at one point also wanted to be a concert pianist. Since his mother was very fond of ballet she enrolled him in classes for the same. Gradually, his fondness for the piano lessened and he began to take up ballet more seriously. This was followed by an enrollment at many Ballet schools in Leningrad and within a year made his debut in 'Giselle'. In the same year he also won the gold medal at the international ballet competition that was held in Bulgaria.
