How Do I Remove Formica Counter Top?

Answer Question

If the formica counter top is in good shape, you could just rough it up a bit by sanding it and then tile right over it.
A 12X12" tile would look good. Tiles come in granite and granite look, but you could use any type of tile. You just lay them close together (no wider than a 1/8 inch spacer), and use a  grout that is close to the color of the tile. Planning and taking notice of focal points is important when tiling. Lay your tile out on the counter top and take measurements. You will want the tiles the same width around the edges of the counter top.
Suggest you tile the front edge before laying the top of the counter, because you will want to cover the edges with the top tile. Bull nose tiles are available for the top edge. You can also purchase tiles with a slight bend for the edges. This tile applied as the top edge peces, prevents spills from running down your cabinets. If you have an L shaped counter, would start the edge tile on the inside corner where the L shape makes its turn. That will be a focal point.
You can attach the tiles with a pre-mixed tile mastic.
Most home supply and tile stores are more than happy to give you instructions on tile laying. It's not that difficult.
But if you want to remove the old counter top; If there is a built on back splash, remove it first.
Most are glued on, so you will most likely need a crowbar, but be sure to use the flattest end of the bar and gently pry it off, then do the same thing with the counter top.
