    Educational psychologists work with young people and their families to help them resolve any problems affecting their education and wellbeing. As well as investigating difficulties and advising school staff and parents, educational psychologists work with individual young people in a therapeutic way to help them make the best of their situation and overcome challanges. Educational psychology is a specialism within general and child psychology. The involvement of a child psychologist does not imply a child is suffering from mental ill health. They can help with social, emotional , learning and behavioural difficulties whuch may have nothing to do with an illness. Educational psychology is a specialism within developmental psychology. This is the scientific study of human development and behaviour. Referral to an educational psychologist can be made  by teachers or carers can ask for their help. In the UK local authorities usually provide an educational psychology service that is independent of schools and colleges.
